Mabolo (Diospyros blancoi, syn. Diospyros discolor Willd.) ist eine tropische Nutzpflanze, welche zu den Ebenholzgewächsen gehört.

Diospyros blancoi erreicht Wuchshöhen von bis zu 33 m, der Stamm bis zu 80 cm Durchmesser. Die Art ist langsam wachsend und trägt immergrüne, wechselständige Blätter, die auf der Oberseite ledrig, dunkelgrün und glatt, auf der Unterseite silbern behaart sind.

Herkunft und Verbreitung

Mabolo stammt aus den Philippinen und wird dort häufig angebaut. Als Nutzpflanze ist die Art in den ganzen Tropen verbreitet, allerdings außer in Südostasien nirgends häufig.

Verwendung

Die Schale der Mabolo-Beere trägt einen unangenehmen Geschmack, welcher dadurch verringert werden kann, dass die Beere vor dem Verzehr einige Stunden im Kühlschrank aufbewahrt wird. Die Frucht kann roh als Speiseobst, in Fruchtsalaten oder in Sirup eingemacht verwendet werden; bei letzterem wird das Fruchtfleisch jedoch faserig und zäh. Die Beere wird als eine gute Eisen-, Kalzium- und Vitamin-B-Quelle angesehen.
