Mahwash

Farida Mahwash (* 1947 in Kabul) ist eine populäre afghanische Sängerin, die als einzige Frau den Titel Ustad trägt. Sie lebt derzeit im Exil in Kalifornien, USA.

Biographie

Farida Mahwash kam in ein einer konservativen Familie zur Welt. Ihre Mutter war Koranlehrerin und somit wurde ihr Interesse an Musik zunächst nicht gefördert. Nach Abschluss ihres Studiums nahm Mahwash eine Stelle bei Radio Kabul an. Hier wurde ihre Stimme durch den Direktor des Senders Hafizullah Khyal entdeckt. Sie nahm Unterricht bei Ustad Mohammad Hashem Cheshti, der ein etablierter Maestro war. 1977 verlieh ihr Mohamed Hussein Sarahang den Titel Ustad. Als Farida gezwungen war, ihr Land zu verlassen, floh sie 1991 nach Pakistan. Seit ihrem Umzug in die USA veröffentlichte sie mehrere Alben.
