Apollonius Rhodius

Apollonios von Rhodos (* 295 v. Chr.; † 215 v. Chr.) war ein griechischer Dichter und Gelehrter.

Geboren wurde er vermutlich in Alexandria, und war dort Schüler des Kallimachos von Kyrene. Sein Hauptwerk ist eine epische Version der Argonautensage in 4 Büchern; auf die Argonautensage scheint bereits von Homer Bezug genommen worden und damit älter als etwa die Odyssee zu sein, sie stammt vermutlich aus dem 14. Jahrhundert v. Chr.. Darin fährt eine Mannschaft aus griechischen Helden, angeführt von Jason, mit dem Schiff Argo in das Land Kolchis, vermutlich im heutigen Georgien gelegen, um nach dem Goldenen Vlies zu suchen.

Zwischen 270 v. Chr. und 245 v. Chr. leitete Apollonios die berühmte Bibliothek von Alexandria als Nachfolger des Zenodotos von Ephesos.
