Als Appliance wird ein Ansatz zum Design für Computer-Hardware bezeichnet, welcher nur einem einzigen oder wenigen Zwecken dient.

Der Zweck einer Appliance ist in der Regel durch die Hardware vorgegeben, z.B. Firewall-Appliances, UTM-Appliances oder PBX-Appliances.

Einfache Installation, leichte Bedienung, Sicherheit und fehlerfreie Funktion stehen bei einer Appliance im Vordergrund.
