Matthäus Paris (Matthaeus Parisiensis, auch Matthäus von Paris; * um 1199 in England; † um 1259) war Geschichtsschreiber im Benediktinerkloster St Albans unweit von London. Er entstammt einer adligen Familie des Geschlechtes de Paris aus Lincolnshire. Auf dem Gebiet der Geschichte war er ein bedeutender Gelehrter.

Dort wurde er ab 1217 zum Schreiber und Illustrator ausgebildet. Mit seinem Hauptwerk, den Chronica Maiora (7 Bände, die 1872–1883 in London herausgegeben wurden), setzte er Roger von Wendovers Flores historiarum für die Zeit von 1234 bis 1259 fort. Das Werk enthält wichtige Informationen zum damaligen Zeitgeschehen. Daneben verfasste Matthäus auch Biografien (Eduard der Bekenner, Thomas Becket, Stephen Langton) und illustrierte seine eigenen Handschriften selbst. Die darin enthaltenen mehr als 100 Wappenschilder sind die früheste englische Quelle der Heraldik. Seine heraldischen Werke sind somit als wichtige Quellen der Heraldik anzusehen.

Er war Vertrauter und Berater von König Heinrich III. von England, aber auch der Könige von Frankreich und Norwegen. [1].
