Ein Archivale (eher bekannt unter dem Plural: Archivalien) ist eine in einem Archiv aufbewahrte Unterlage[1].
Neben den bekanntesten Archivaliengattungen in Schriftform (Urkunden, Akten, Amtsbücher usw.) gibt es auch audiovisuelle Quellen (Fotos, Karten, Pläne usw.) und seit neuestem digitale Unterlagen.
Archivalien sind Unikate, das heißt sie sind als Originale nur einmal vorhanden (im Gegensatz zu gedruckten Quellen wie Büchern).
