Milton Byron Babbitt

Milton Byron Babbitt (* 10. Mai 1916 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) ist ein US-amerikanischer Komponist.

Babbitt begann 1931 ein Mathematikstudium an der University of Pennsylvania und wechselte später nach New York City. Nach dem Studium nahm er Kompositionsunterricht bei Roger Sessions. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges arbeitete er als Mathematikprofessor an der Princeton University. Seit 1950 wirkte er an der Entwicklung der ersten Synthesizer mit. 1959 gehörte er zu den Gründern des Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Studio. Er unterrichtete an verschiedenen Universitäten, zuletzt an der Princeton University und der Juilliard School of Music als Kompositionsprofessor.

Er ist einer der Pioniere der Seriellen und Elektronischen Musik. Für seine Leistungen auf diesem Gebiet erhielt er 1982 den Pulitzer-Preis für Komposition. 1995 wurde er mit dem SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award ausgezeichnet.
