Der Monte Somma ist ein alter Vulkan in Italien mit einer Höhe von 1.132 m. Nach dem Einsturz der oberflächennahen Magmakammern 79 n. Chr. entstand eine große Caldera mit einem Durchmesser von ungefähr 4 km, in der sich ein neuer Vulkankegel bildete, der heute noch aktive und 1.281 m hohe Vesuv (ital. Monte Vesuvio).
