Die Mueller-Lyer-Illusion ist vermutlich die bekannteste geometrisch-optische Täuschung. Entdeckt wurde sie von Franz Müller-Lyer vor ungefähr 100 Jahren.

Das Phänomen: Eine Linie zwischen zwei spitzen Winkeln erscheint deutlich kürzer als eine gleich lange Linie, bei der die Pfeilspitzen umgekehrt sind. Für diese Täuschung existiert bis heute keine einhellige Erklärung.

  • Eine mangelhafte Koordinierung zwischen Gehirn und Augenmuskulatur stellt einen weiteren Erklärungsansatz für die Täuschung dar.
  • Eine weitere Erklärung ist, dass die Konstrukte unbewusst als räumliche Objekte interpretiert werden, etwa als ausgebauchtes bzw. eingeschnürtes Gefäß, wobei die Mittellinien unbewusst den Längen der Ober- bzw. Unterkanten angenähert werden.
