Als Tri-State werden digitale Schaltungselemente bezeichnet, deren Ausgänge nicht wie üblich nur zwei (0 und 1), sondern zusätzlich noch einen dritten Zustand annehmen können, der mit „Z“ oder auch mit „high impedance“ (hochohmig) bezeichnet wird.

Durch Tri-States ist es möglich, die Ausgänge mehrerer Bauelemente zusammenzuschalten, ohne dass es zu Kurzschlüssen, einer Überlagerung oder einer wired-and-Verknüpfung kommt, z. B. bei Datenbussen.

hochohmiger Zustand (Z)

Der hochohmige Zustand (Z) wird von einem Bauteil ausgegeben, wenn dieses keine aktive Eingabe hat. Bei digitalen Schaltungen bedeutet dies, dass das Ausgangssignal weder logisch 0 noch 1 ist, sondern hochohmig. Ein solches Signal sorgt dafür, dass sich das Bauteil verhält als wäre es nicht verbunden und beeinflusst nicht die Ausgaben anderer Bauteile, die mit diesen parallel geschaltet sind. Es nimmt vielmehr dieselbe Ausgangsspannung der aktiven anderen Bauteile an.

Dies entspricht einem geschlossenen Schalter. Durch einen LOW-Pegel (kurz L; logisch 0) auf dem C-Eingang wird der Ausgang hochohmig (Z; unbestimmt) geschaltet. Im hochohmigen Zustand hat der Ausgang keinen festgelegten Pegel. Die Wirkungsweise kann man sich mit einem Schalter vorstellen, der bei einem Eingang auf C öffnet. Bei einem HIGH-Pegel (kurz H; logisch 1) auf dem C-Eingang wird der Pegel am Eingang A auf den Ausgang übertragen.
