FA Trophy

Die Football Association Challenge Trophy ist ein Pokalwettbewerb im englischen Fußball.

Teilnehmer

An dem Wettbewerb nehmen die Mannschaften der ersten bis vierten Liga des National League Systems teil, d.h. die Vereine aus den drei Ligen der Football Conference und den darunter angesiedelten regionalen Meisterschaften Southern League, Isthmian League und Northern Premier League. Die Teilnehmer sind also alle fünft- bis achtklassig. Mannschaften aus den in der Ligapyramide weiter unten angesiedelten Ligen nehmen an der FA Vase teil.

Geschichte

Der Wettbewerb wurde 1969 für halbprofessionelle Vereine eingeführt. Ursprünglich fand das Finalspiel im Wembley-Stadion statt, wurde während des Umbaus aber in den Villa Park verlegt. Nach Ende der Bauarbeiten werden die Finalspiele wieder an ihren angestammten Platz zurückkehren.

Pokal

Die Trophäe, die der Gewinner erhält, wurde 1905 von Ernest Cochrane gestiftet, um einen internationalen Wettbewerb zwischen Mannschaften aus England, den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada auszuspielen. Damit sollte die Entwicklung der Sportart in der neuen Welt vorangetrieben werden. Allerdings wurde dieser Wettbewerb nie durchgeführt.
