Die National Academy of Sciences (NAS) ist Teil der US-amerikanischen National Academies und wurde mit Abraham Lincolns Unterschrift am 3. März 1863 ins Leben gerufen. Es handelt sich um eine Ehrengesellschaft („honorific society“), bestehend aus führenden Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Disziplinen, welche die US-Regierung und deren Stellen in wissenschaftlichen Fragen berät und Untersuchungen durchführt. Die Aufgaben der NAS wurden durch den vom US-Kongress 1863 beschlossenen „Act of Incorporation“ und einigen seither verabschiedeten Zusätzen definiert[1].
Gegenwärtiger Präsident ist der Atmosphärenspezialist Ralph J. Cicerone. Bis 2005 war es der Biochemiker Bruce Alberts.
Das offizielle Organ der NAS sind die Proceedings of the NAS (PNAS).
