Nelhybel

Václav Nelhýbel (* 24. September 1919 in Polanka nad Odrou, Tschechien; † 22. März 1996 in Scranton, Pennsylvania) war ein US-amerikanischer Komponist und Dirigent tschechischer Herkunft.

Václav Nelhýbel studierte von 1938 bis 1942 Komposition und Dirigieren am Konservatorium in Prag und Musikwissenschaft an der Karls-Universität Prag sowie der Universität Freiburg (Schweiz). Zuletzt war er Professor an der University of Scranton.

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war er Komponist und Dirigent beim Schweizer Rundfunk (DRS) und lehrte an der Universität in Freiburg im Üechtland. 1950 wurde er Erster Musikdirektor von Radio Free Europe in München und blieb es, bis er 1957 gänzlich in die USA übersiedelte.

Er lebte zunächst einige Jahre in New York wechselte dann nach Ridgefield, später nach Newton, Bundesstaat Connecticut, um sich 1994 in der Region Scranton im Bundesstaat Pennsylvania niederzulassen. 1962 wurde er US-amerikanischer Staatsbürger.

Sein Œuvre umfasst rund 600 Werke, wovon etwa 400 gedruckt und veröffentlicht wurden. Er bekam zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Preise für seine Werke, so im Jahre 1954 den Preis des International Music and Dance Festivals in Kopenhagen, Dänemark, für sein Ballet In the Shadow of the Limetree, den 1. Preis der Ravitch Foundation in New York für seine Oper A Legend, 1978 den Award from the Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts. Vier US-amerikanische Universitäten verliehen ihm den Ehrendoktor-Titel.
