Der Nordrhodesische Afrikanische Nationalkongress (African National Congress) ist eine politische Partei in Sambia, die 1948 als Nordrhodesischer Kongress gegründet wurde und die erste politische Partei des Landes war.

Vorgeschichte

Ihr Wurzeln sind die Wohlfahrtsorganisationen (Welfare Societies) der Schwarzafrikaner im Copperbelt, die gegründet werden durften und, weil die britische Kolonialregierung eine Gewerkschaftsverbot aufrechterhielt, politisch genutzt wurden. Der Streik der schwarzen Arbeiter 1930 wurde in diesen Wohlfahrtsorganisationen abgestimmt.

1951 nahm die Partei den Namen Nordrhodesischer Afrikanischer Nationalkongress (Northern Rhodesian African National Congress) an und wählte Harry Nkumbula zu ihrem Präsidenten.

Entwicklung

Es bestanden Verbindungen des Nordrhodesischen Afrikanischen Nationalkongresses zum Afrikanischen Nationalkongress (African National Congress) in Südafrika. 1953 wurde Kenneth Kaunda Generalsekretär der Partei. Er kam aus Chinsali.

1958 spaltete sich die Partei über der Frage, ob sie an den Wahlen zur Legislative teilnehmen sollte, in der nur eine Minderheit der schwarzen Bevölkerung wahlberechtigt war. Kenneth Kaunda trat für eine radikale Position ein, spaltete sein Lager ab und gründete den Sambischen Afrikanischen Nationalkongress (Zambian African National Congress).
