Padmore

George Padmore (* 1902 in Arouca, Trinidad; † 1959 in Ghana) war ein afrikanischer Publizist und Politiker des Panafrikanismus.

Leben

Padmore zog 1924 in die USA, wo er der „Kommunistischen Partei“ beitrat. 1929 übersiedelte er nach Moskau, wo er zum Chef des Negro Bureau of the Communist International of Labour Unions ernannt wurde. Im Zuge der Stalinisierung wurde Padmore 1934 aus der sowjetischen KP ausgeschlossen. Er zog daraufhin nach London und veröffentlichte in den folgenden Jahren eine Reihe von Büchern und Zeitungsartikeln über den Kolonialismus.

1945 war Padmore an der Organisation des fünften Panafrikanischen Kongresses in Manchester beteiligt. Im selben Jahr lernte er in London Kwame Nkrumah kennen, mit dem ihn fortan eine fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit verband. Die letzten zwei Jahre seines Lebens verbrachte Padmore in Ghana als Berater Nkrumahs.
