Papist

Papist (auch Romanist) ist eine von dem Wort Papst abgeleitete, abwertende Bezeichnung für Katholiken durch andere, vor allem protestantische Christen.

Der polemische Ausdruck geht auf die Reformationszeit in England im 16. Jahrhundert zurück. Er reduzierte den Katholizismus bewusst auf das Papsttum, das als herausragendes Einheits- und Abgrenzungssymbol gesehen wird. Im deutschen Sprachraum wird der Begriff heute nur noch selten oder nur noch in ironisch-distanzierender Weise gebraucht.
