Papovaviridae

Papovaviridae ist eine mittlerweile hinfällige, akronymisierte Kurzbezeichnung für eine ehemalige Virusfamilie gebildet aus Papilloma-, Polyoma - und Simian Vacuolating Virus 40. Diese Einteilung ist in der offiziellen Virus-Taxonomie abgeschafft, und heute bilden Polyomaviridae und Papillomaviridae jeweils eigene Familien.

Die ursprünglich Papovaviridae genannte Familie umfasste Viren mit doppelsträngiger, zirkulärer DNA und einem ikosaedrischen Kapsid ohne Virushülle. Papillomviren und Polyomaviren sind weltweit verbreitet und kommen sowohl beim Menschen wie bei Primaten, Rindern, Nagetieren und Vögeln vor.
