Peabody Energy, vormals Peabody Coal Company, ist das größte US-amerikanische Bergbauunternehmen in der Steinkohleförderung mit Firmensitz in St. Louis, Missouri. Das Unternehmen ist im Aktienindex S&P 500 gelistet. Peabody Energy beschäftigt rund 8.300 Mitarbeiter.

Peabody Energy wurde 1883 in Chicago, Illinois gegründet.

Peabody möchte 2010 den australischen Kohleförderer Macarthur übernehmen und hat Mitte April 2010 sein Übernahmeangebot zum zweiten Mal erhöht. Nun stehen 16 Australische Dollar je Aktie in bar im Angebot, das einem Gesamtpreis von 4,1 Milliarden US-Dollar (2,8 Mrd Euro) entspricht und das Konkurrenzangebot des australischen Kohleunternehmen New Hope Coal überbietet.[1]
