Unter dem Sammelbegriff Periphyton versteht man den Aufwuchs von Mikroalgen an submersen (= unter der Wasseroberfläche befindlichen) Oberflächen, wie z. B. Steinen. Das Periphyton ist wichtiger Bestandteil von limnischen und marinen Ökosystemen und dient vielen Protozoen und kleinen Metazoen, aber auch Schnecken und Insektenlarven als Nahrung.
