Pingback

Pingback ist eine Methode, die es Web-Autoren erlaubt, mittels eines XML-RPC eine Benachrichtigung anzufordern, sobald jemand ihre Dokumente oder Seiten verlinkt. Dies erlaubt den Autoren nachzuverfolgen, wer auf ihre Seiten verweist oder Teile davon zitiert.

Tatsächlich ist es aber eher ein Lauschen als ein Anfordern: Zunächst muss die Gegenseite Pingback unterstützen. Einige Weblog-Programmpakete (wie z. B. WordPress) gehen folgendermaßen vor: Bei der Veröffentlichung eines Blog-Eintrages werden alle darin aufgeführten Links automatisch benachrichtigt (angepingt, siehe Blogping). Die lauschende Seite nimmt diesen Ping auf, überprüft auf der sendenden Seite die Existenz des Links und führt diesen dann bei sich selbst auf (möglicherweise mit einem Textauszug des verlinkenden Beitrags).
