Practice Squad

Der Begriff Practice Squad wird hauptsächlich in der nordamerikanischen Footballliga National Football League (NFL) gebraucht. Er bezeichnet einen Teil des Teams, das zwar an allen Trainingseinheiten teilnimmt, allerdings nicht zum aktiven, 53 Spieler umfassenden Kader gehört.

Spieler in der Practice Squad können in den Saison-Spielen nicht eingesetzt werden, haben aber die Möglichkeit, während einer Saison "aktiviert" zu werden (zum Beispiel bei Verletzung eines Spielers im aktiven Kader, oder Aufrücken auf einen freien Platz im aktiven Kader bei guten Trainingsleistungen).

Seit 2004 nutzte die NFL die Practice Squads von einigen Teams (vier Teams 2004, acht Teams 2005) für das sogenannte "Player Development Program". Im Zuge dieses Programms stellte sie nicht-amerikanischen Spielern aus der Tochterliga NFL Europe einen Platz in der Practice Squad eines amerikanischen Profiteams zur Verfügung, den sie die gesamte Saison über innehaben. Diese Spieler genossen das Privileg, sich keine Sorgen um Entlassungen machen zu müssen, hatten aber im Gegenzug keine Möglichkeit, in den aktiven Kader aufzurücken. Diese Praxis fand mit der Auflösung der NFL Europa ein Ende.
