Raffia

Als Raffia oder auch Raphia bezeichnet man Textilien aus dem Bast der Raffia- oder Bastpalme (Raphia farinifera). Die Fasern zeichnen sich durch große Dehnbarkeit und Festigkeit aus. Produkte, welche aus Raffia hergestellt werden, sind unter anderem Matten, Körbe und Hüte.

Der Lieferant dieses Rohstoffes, die Raffiapalme, stammt ursprünglich aus Madagaskar. Dort stellt der Raffiabast seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts einen wichtigen Exportartikel dar. Durch Raubbau ist der Bestand auf der Insel jedoch inzwischen stark geschrumpft. Die Pflanze wird allerdings auch in Ost-, West- und Südafrika angebaut.
