Ein Empfehlungsdienst (englisch Recommender System) ist ein automatisches Verfahren, das ausgehend von vorhandenen Webseiten oder anderen Objekten ähnliche Objekte ermittelt und empfiehlt. Zur Ermittlung der passenden Empfehlungen verwendet ein Empfehlungsdienst Methoden des Data-Minings und Information Retrieval. Bei der Empfehlung von Hyperlinks werden darüber hinaus Informationen aus dem konkreten Kontext (Webseiten-Zugriff) und zusätzliche Informationen wie z. B. die Kauf-, Navigations- oder Klick-Historie herangezogen.

Man kann zwischen vier Typen von Kontext-Informationen unterscheiden:

  • aktueller Inhalt, d. h. der aktuell vom Benutzer angeschaute Inhalt (Seitenaufruf, Produkt, ...) und damit verbundene weitere Informationen wie z. B. die Kategorie des Inhalts
  • aktueller Benutzer, identifiziert durch ein Cookie, und ihm zuzuordnende Informationen wie z. B.
    • Stamm-Informationen, z. B. Geschlecht, Alter, Herkunft, ...
    • Transaktionsinformationen, z. B. bisherige Käufe, bisheriges Navigationsverhalten, Interessensgebiete, Präferenzen, ...
  • aktuelle Intention, d. h. Absicht und Zweck des Webseiten-Zugriffs, z. B. um ein Produkt für sich oder als Geschenk zu suchen, ...
  • weitere Kontext-Informationen über den Webseiten-Zugriff, z. B. aus der HTTP-Anfrage (aktuelle Zeit, URL, IP-Adresse, …)

Eine bekannte Recommendation Engine ist jene von Amazon.com zur Empfehlung von Buchtiteln und anderen Produkten. Ein anderes Beispiel ist der BibTip-Dienst der Universitätsbibliothek Karlsruhe[1]. Anbieter von Empfehlungsmaschinen und -diensten finden sich unten.
