Redcliffe

Redcliffe, auch Redcliff, ist mit 34.000 Einwohnern (2006) die deutlich kleinere Nachbarstadt von Kwekwe in der Provinz Midlands und liegt 1.306 m hoch am Great Dyke in Simbabwe. Die Vorkommen an Eisenerz hier sind riesig. Es ist eine Stadt der Eisen- und Stahlindustrie, die zweitgrößte Produktionsstätte Schwarzafrikas. ZISCO (Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company) und BIMCO (Buchwa Iron Mining Company) sind die beiden größten Arbeitgeber in der Stadt.

Die augenblickliche Situation ist allerdings fatal. Die Stahlproduktion ist von 450.000 t im Jahr 2000 auf 271.812 t im Jahr 2002 gefallen - mit weiter sinkender Tendenz. Die Arbeitslosigkeit ist inzwischen extrem hoch, ZISCO ist kurz davor, die Förderungen einzustellen. Die Infrastruktur ist verrottet und funktioniert in Teilen nicht mehr. In den dicht bevölkerten Vorstädten patrouilliert wie in denen von Kwekwe und Gweru das Militär. Inzwischen kontaktierte die Regierung China und Deutschland, um die Produktion wieder in den Griff zu bekommen.
