Das Auto Program Search System, abgekürzt APSS, ist eine von Sharp herausgebrachte Technik für Audiokassettenspieler, um auf Audiokassetten - ähnlich wie auf dem moderneren Medium CD - automatisch zum Anfang des nächsten oder vorherigen Liedes zu spulen.
Funktionsweise
Während angeschaltetem APSS bleibt der Tonkopf ausgefahren, während vorgespult wird. Registriert der Tonabnehmer eine kleine Pause, wechselt der Kassettenspieler in den Play-Modus, sodass das nächste bzw. das vorherige Lied abgespielt wird. Das System ist mit Vor- und Zurückspulen möglich, auf APSS-fähigen Spielern kann die Funktion meistens durch gemeinsamen Drücken der PLAY- und FORWARD- bzw. der PLAY- und REWIND-Taste gestartet werden.
Nachteile des Systems
Die Produktion und Verbreitung des Systems wurde kurz darauf eingestellt, da sich das Spulen mit ausgefahrenem Tonkopf sehr negativ auf das Material der Kassette sowie auf den Tobabnehmer auswirkte. Außerdem unterstützte das neuere Speichermedium CD eine komplett freie und unabhängige Track-Auswahl, was das APSS-System unnötig erscheinen ließ und vom Markt verdrängte.
