Die Geschichte der Royal High School (RHS) in Edinburgh lässt sich bis 1128 zurückverfolgen, womit sie als die älteste Schule in Schottland und als eine der ältesten in Europa gilt. Zunächst gehörte die Schule zur Holyrood Abbey (siehe Holyrood Palace), später wurde sie zu einer Institution zur Ausbildung von Franziskanern. Bis 1974 war die Royal High School eine private Schule. Dann wurde sie von der Stadt Edinburgh übernommen. Die Schule ist bekannt für ihre strenge Erziehung, wobei Schuluniformen Pflicht sind.
Mit der Übernahme durch die Stadt Edinburgh wurde es 1974 von einer reinen Jungenschule zu einer gemischten Schule, die momentan 1200 Schüler hat.
