Geschichte
Die nur kurzzeitige existierende Band wurde im Oktober 1980 von Henry Garfield, Michael Hampton, Wendel Blow und Ivor Hanson gegründet.
Die Band spielt 12 Konzerte, das Erste am 6. Dezember 1980, wobei die Konzertdauer im Durchschnitt zwischen 12 und 40 Minuten lag, je nachdem wie oft das berühmt gewordene "Are your ready?" von der Band gerufen wurde[1].
Das letzte Konzert spielte die Band in Philadelphia als Eröffner für Black Flag, in der Henry danach Sänger wurde[2].
Bereits 1981 verlässt Simon Jacobsen die Band und wird durch Ivor Hanson am Schlagzeug ersetzt. Mit dieser Besetzung werden auch Songs aufgenommen, die Dischord Records als EP heraus bringen will. Jedoch fehlt dem Label zu diesem Zeitpunkt das Geld für die Pressung, da auch eine Platte von Minor Threat veröffentlicht werden soll. So bezahlt Henry Garfield die Pressung der aufgenommen Songs auf eigene Rechnung mit Geld, das er mit der Arbeit als Filialleiter in einem Ice Cream-Shop gemacht hatte[3].
Nach der Auflösung wird Henry Garfield, der seinen Nachnamen in Rollins ändert, Sänger von Black Flag[4]. Michael Hampton und Ivor Hansen gründeten mit Anderen zusammen The Faith.
Stil
Der Sound der Band gilt als typisch für den frühen Washington D.C. Hardcore-Punk. Charakteristisch für die Gruppe waren vor allem die sehr schnellen, aggressiv gespielten - und sehr kurzen - Songs.
Auf der Seite des Labels Dischord Records wird über die Wirkung der Band folgendes geschrieben:
“SOA brought a new level of aggression to the music, and it reflected well the mood of many of the kids in the young DC punk scene. [5]”
