Sanaag (arabisch ‏سناغ‎‎ Sanāgh) ist eine Region (gobolka) im Norden Somalias mit etwa 511.000 Einwohnern[1]. Sie wird sowohl vom de facto unabhängigen Somaliland als auch vom de facto autonomen somalischen Teilgebiet Puntland beansprucht. Ihre Hauptstadt ist Erigabo. Eine weitere Stadt ist Laasqorey (Las Khorey).

Sanaag liegt am Golf von Aden. Die Region ist in die Distrikte Erigabo, El Afweyn (Ceel-Afweyn) und Laasqorey eingeteilt. Die Küste von Sanaag ist als Makhirküste bekannt.

Das westliche Drittel von Sanaag wird vom Clan der Isaaq bewohnt, die übrigen zwei Drittel im Osten von Warsangeli- sowie im Südosten Dhulbahante-Darod.

Am 1. Juli 2007 riefen Warsangeli-Darod in Badhan angesichts der Streitigkeiten zwischen Somaliland und Puntland um ihr Gebiet ihren eigenen Makhir-Staat (Maakhir State) aus. Dieser beansprucht einen Großteil von Sanaag und wurde bislang von keinem Staat anerkannt. Es ist unklar, inwiefern der Makhir-Staat tatsächlich Kontrolle über sein beanspruchtes Gebiet ausübt.[2]
