Sandbagging

Sandbagging ist ein aus dem Boxen stammender Begriff, der das Boxen gegen einen Sandsack („sandbag“) umschreibt. In der Schachszene ist es eine Bezeichnung für das absichtliche, betrügerische Verlieren einer Schachpartie, um dem Gegenüber Wertungspunkte zukommen zu lassen.

Im Internet-Schach kann ein Spieler durch das Einrichten mehrerer Benutzerkonten gegen sich selbst spielen und so die virtuelle Wertungszahl eines dieser Konten durch absichtliche Niederlagen der anderen eigenen Benutzer auf „Meister“-Niveau hochtreiben. Im Turnierschach kann ein Spieler durch absichtliche Niederlagen bei unbedeutenderen Turnieren sein Elo-Rating drücken, um dann bei bedeutenderen Turnieren Preisgelder in einer niedrigeren Spielklasse zu gewinnen.

Üblicherweise bewerten die Betreiber von Schachturnieren solche Versuche als Betrug und versuchen sich durch Disqualifikation dagegen zu wehren. Beispielsweise heißt es in den Turnierstatuten zu Preisschach-Turnieren des Internet Chess Club regelmäßig:

SANDBAGGING: ICC will not tolerate intentionally losing games in order to make yourself eligible for a prize in a lower rating class. Anyone caught doing so will be immediately forfeited from the tournament and will be ineligible for any prize... [1]

Ähnlich hieß es bei dem Veranstalter ChessLive:

Penalties: If anyone is caught cheating, they will be disqualified from the tournament IMMEDIATELY and will be added to CCheat list for a period of ONE YEAR. Also, if players are found sandbagging, there will be punishment as well and will result in being disqualified.
