Der Sefid Rud (persischسفیدرود‎) oder auch Rud-e Safid (Weisser Fluss) ist ein 670 km langer Fluss im Nordwesten des Iran. Der Sefid Rud mündet bei Rascht ins Kaspische Meer. Er ist nach dem Karun der zweitgrößte Fluss des Irans.

Der Sefid Rud hat auf seinem Weg zum Kaspischen Meer einen Durchgang durch das Elburs-Gebirge gegraben - die Manjil Pforte. [1] Diese Pforte bildet eine wichtige Route zwischen Teheran und Gilan an der kaspischen Küste.

Oberhalb der Pforte ist der Fluss auch unter dem Namen Qizil Uzun (türkisch für Roter langer Fluss) bekannt.[2] [3] In der Antike trug er den Namen Mardus oder Amardus. Bekannt ist der Fluss für seinen Fischreichtum - besonders für die kaspische Forelle (Salmo trutta caspius) - und für seine Goldführung.

1962 wurde am Unterlauf des Sefid Ruds der Staudamm Schahbanu Farah errichtet. [4] Der Stausee hat eine Fläche von 2.380 km². Das Wasser wird unter anderem für den Reisanbau im Delta benutzt.[5][6] Der Staudamm produziert 87.000 KWh Strom.
