Backarc-Becken (engl. Back-arc basin) und Forearc-Becken (engl. Fore-arc basin) sind Seebecken, die bei der Subduktion einer ozeanischen Platte unter eine andere ozeanische Platte entstehen können.

Dort wo die subduzierte Platte unter die aufliegende Platte abtaucht, befindet sich eine Tiefseerinne. Zwischen der Tiefseerinne und dem Inselbogen kann ein Forearc-Becken entstehen und auf der anderen Seite des Inselbogens ein Backarc-Becken, da dort die Kontinentalplatte gedehnt wird und eine Spreizungszone entsteht.

Backarc-Becken entstehen bevorzugt an Inselbögen, in deren Subduktionszonen relativ alte, d. h. schwere ozeanische Kruste subduziert wird. Die subduzierte ozeanische Platte taucht in einem relativ steilen Winkel unter den Inselbogen ab. Dadurch entstehen Zugkräfte an der Platte, unter die die ozeanische Platte abtaucht. So kann es innerhalb des magmatischen Bogens (Inselbogens) zur Bildung von Bruchzonen und Gräben (Bruchtektonik) kommen, an denen sich neue ozeanische Kruste bildet. Die gebildeten Bruchzonen innerhalb des magmatischen Bogens können sich zu kleinen ozeanischen Becken ausweiten, die aus relativ junger ozeanischer Kruste bestehen.

Beispiele für Backarc-Becken sind: Das japanische Becken zwischen dem asiatischen Festland und Japan, das Südchinesische Meer, sowie die Sulu-See und die Celebes-See.

Beispiele für aktive Backarc-Spreizungszonen sind: der Marianen-Bogen östlich der Philippinen und der Kermadec-Tonga-Rücken gegenüber dem Kermadec-Tonga-Graben, nordöstlich von Neuseeland.
