Der Bezirk wurde am 1. April 1974 gebildet und entstand aus der Fusion der Boroughs Chard und Yeovil, der Urban Districts Crewkerne und Ilminster sowie der Rural Districts Chard, Langport, Wincanton und Yeovil.
