Starý Smokovec (deutsch Altschmecks, ungarisch Ótátrafüred) ist ein Ortsteil von Vysoké Tatry und liegt in 1.010 m n.m. am südlichen Abhang der Slavkovský štit (Schlagendorfer Spitze) in der Hohen Tatra. Seit 1999 ist Starý Smokovec der Verwaltungssitz der Stadt Vysoké Tatry.

Geschichte

Der Ort wurde 1793 gegründet. Starý Smokovec entwickelte sich an der Quelle des seit uralten Zeiten bekannten „Altschmeckser Sauerwasser“. Ab der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts entstanden größere Hotels. Wegen der Quelle gab es Kureinrichtungen.

Seit 1908 verbindet die Elektrische Tatrabahn Starý Smokovec mit Poprad und Štrbské Pleso. 1912 entstand noch eine Zweigstrecke nach Tatranská Lomnica. Daraufhin entwickelte sich Starý Smokovec zum bedeutendsten Touristenort im Süden der Hohen Tatra. Altschmecks stand zu der Zeit im Wettbewerb mit den anderen neuentstandenen Siedlungen in der Hohen Tatra.

Fremdenverkehr

Starý Smokovec ist das älteste touristische Erholungszentrum der Hohen Tatra. Viele markierte Wanderwege und Bergpfade haben ihren Beginn in Starý Smokovec. Eine moderne Standseilbahn führt zum 1.280 m hohen Hrebienok (Kämmchen).
