State of the Art

Mit dem Ausdruck State of the Art bezeichnet man im englischen Sprachraum den höchsten verfügbaren Entwicklungszustand einer bestimmten Technologie. Umgangssprachlich wird damit meist das höchstentwickelte verfügbare technische Gerät (z. B. Computer, Stereoanlage) seiner Klasse bezeichnet.

Ein Ausdruck mit ähnlicher Bedeutung ist High-End. Im Bereich der Unterhaltungselektronik bezeichnet High-End eine eigene Sparte der Audio-Technik. Die so bezeichneten Geräte sollen sich durch ihre überragende Klangqualität auszeichnen. Jedoch muss High-End nicht unbedingt etwas modernes sein, da der Begriff z. B. auch für „wiederauflebende“ ältere Technologien z. B. Schallplatten oder Elektronenröhren verwendet wird.

High-End-Artikel sind im anglo-amerikanischen Sprachraum allgemein teure, Mid-End mittelpreisige und Low-End billige Artikel.

Die früheste bekannte Anwendung des Begriffs soll aus dem Handbuch Gas Turbine (1910) von Henry Harrison Suplee stammen, worin es heißt: “In the present state of the art this is all that can be done.”

Der patentrechtliche Begriff bzw. die TechnikklauselStand der Technik“ bezeichnen hingegen die jeweils aktuell bekannten technischen Verfahren oder Vorrichtungen.
