al-Isra (arabisch ‏الإسراء‎, DMG al-Isrāʾ) ist die 17. Sure des Korans. Der Titel wird interpretierend mit „Die nächtliche Reise“ übersetzt. Die Sure enthält 111 Verse und wurde in Mekka offenbart[1]. In ihr wird berichtet, dass der Prophet Mohammed eine nächtliche Reise aus Mekka zu der „entferntesten Kultstätte“ (al-aqṣā) in Jerusalem unternommen habe.[2] Ihre Hauptthemen sind die Einzigkeit Gottes [3], Berichte über den Jüngsten Tag [4], und die gesellschaftliche Ordnung [5]. Weiherhin finden sich Berichte über die Propheten Adam, David, Mohammed, Moses und Noah [6] und die Verbannung des Teufels aus dem Himmel [7].

Die Reise hat nach islamischer Überlieferung am 27. Tag des Monats Radschab im Jahr vor der Hidschra stattgefunden. Seit der Umayyadenzeit gilt Jerusalem mit dem Bezirk um die al-Aqsa-Moschee als der drittwichtigste Ort des Islam nach Mekka und Medina. Dort wurden als bekannteste Gebäude die genannte Moschee und der Felsendom errichtet.
