Ted Joans

Ted Joans, eigentlich Theodore Jones (* 4. Juli 1928 in Cairo, Illinois; † 25. April 2003 in Vancouver, Kanada) war ein US-amerikanischer Trompeter, Jazz-Poet und Maler.

In den 1960er-Jahren besaß Joans ein Haus in Timbuktu. Er behauptete ein Bruder von LeRoi Jones zu sein; dies ist jedoch ungewiss. Ted Joans wurde als Theodore Jones auf einem Hausboot in Cairo, Illinois, geboren. Er absolvierte ein Kunststudium an der Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Joans gesellte sich später zu den Schriftstellern der Beat Generation in New Yorks Greenwich Village und in San Francisco. Er war ein Freund von Jack Kerouac und Allen Ginsberg. Sein Gemälde „Bird Lives!“ hängt im De-Young-Museum in San Francisco. Joans war nach dem Tod von Charlie Parker im März 1955 der Urheber der „Bird Lives!“-Legende und des gleichnamigen Graffitis in New York City. Er erfand die surrealistische Technik der „Outagraphie“, in der der Hauptgegenstand einer Fotografie aus dem Bild geschnitten wird. Ted Joans starb in Vancouver, Kanada, nachdem er lange an Diabetes erkrankt war.

Joans Gedichtbände wurden auf deutsch unter dem Namen „Blitzlieb Poems“ veröffentlicht, Blitzlieb ist natürlich eine witzige Anspielung auf Blitzkrieg.
