Telford ist eine Planstadt in der selbstständigen Verwaltungseinheit Telford and Wrekin in der Region West Midlands und hat 138.241 Einwohner (Stand: 2001). Telford ist über den Motorway M54 an das britische Autobahnnetz angeschlossen.

Telford entstand auf dem Reißbrett und wurde in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren gebaut. Dabei wurden bestehende Orte wie Dawley, Oakengates, Wellington und Madeley einbezogen. Zu Telford gehört auch die Ironbridge Gorge, das Tal von Ironbridge, ein Welterbe. Der Fluss Severn in diesem Tal wird von der 1779 gebauten Iron Bridge* - der weltweit ersten Eisenbrücke - überspannt.

Der Name verweist auf den Bauingenieur Thomas Telford. Thomas Telford war einer der ersten 'modernen' Bauingenieure des englischen Straßen- und Brückenbaus.

Im Telford International Centre wird seit 2008 die UK Championship, ein wichtiges Profisnookerturnier, ausgetragen.

Am Stadtrand hat die Firma Cobra Seats, ein bekannter Hersteller von Autositzen und Motorsport-Zubehör, ihren Hauptsitz.

Anmerkung: *Die Brücke aus Gusseisen im Ortsteil Ironbridge haben jedoch der Architekt Thomas Pritchard und der örtliche Eisenproduzent Abraham Darby III. 1773 - 1779 geplant und gebaut. Ein Nachbau der Brücke steht als Anerkennung für diese Leistung in den Wörlitzer Gärten in der Nähe von Dessau.
