The Triumph of Time and Truth

The Triumph of Time and Truth (HWV 71) ist ein Oratorium in drei Teilen von Georg Friedrich Händel.

Entstehung

Händel komponierte sein letztes neues Oratorium Jephtha im Jahr 1752. Im Verlaufe der Arbeiten daran zeigt sich, wie er mehr und mehr erblindete. Dennoch wandte er sich noch Ende 1756 dem Oratorium The Triumph of Time and Truth zu, das zwar im Wesentlichen eine Überarbeitung eines älteren Werks ist, aber dennoch eine große Menge neuen Materials enthält.

Auf seiner Italienreise schrieb Händel 1707 in Rom das Oratorium in zwei Teilen Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno. Nach tiefgreifenden Umarbeitungen schuf er daraus 1737 die dreiteilige Zweitfassung Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità, die noch in italienischer Sprache gesungen wurde. Das englischsprachige The Triumph enthält 13 Nummern aus der Fassung von 1707, 9 Nummern aus der Fassung von 1737 sowie 10 neue Stücke. Es stellt also nicht weniger als einen Bogen über den Großteil seines künstlerischen Lebens dar.

Die Textzusammenstellung wird Thomas Morell zugeschrieben, der Librettist der meisten späten Händeloratorien. Bei der Übersetzung konnte er sich allerdings auf die 1737 veröffentlichte englische Übersetzung von Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità von George Oldmixon stützen. Auf ihn selbst geht die Einführung einer neuen Figur Deceit zurück.

Die Uraufführung fand am 11. März 1757 im Covent Garden Theatre statt und war wie folgt besetzt:

  • Time - Samuel Champness (Bass)
  • Counsel (bzw. Truth) - Isabella Young (Mezzosopran)
  • Beauty - Giulia Frasi (Sopran)
  • Pleasure - John Beard (Tenor)
  • Deceit - Signora Beralta (Soprano)

Die Leitung der Aufführung hatte – wie bei anderen Konzerten von Händelwerken in dieser Phase – sein Assistent John Christopher Smith. Es ist nicht bekannt, welche Rolle Smith ansonsten bei dieser Komposition spielte. Wahrscheinlich modifizierte er die Partitur gemäß mündlichen Anweisungen Händels.

Das Werk wurde im Jahr 1757 viermal und im Jahr darauf zweimal gegeben.
