Baron Baltimore (Anrede Lord Baltimore) ist ein heute erloschener erblicher Adelstitel der Peerage of Ireland.

Geschichte

König Jakob I. schuf den nach dem Gut Baltimore Manor im irischen County Longford benannten Titel 1625 und verlieh ihn in Anerkennung der treuen Dienste seinem Staatssekretär George Calvert. Calvert hatte zuvor von seinem Amt zurücktreten müssen, da er zur römisch-katholischen Kirche konvertiert war. Der Titel ging in der Folge auf den jeweils ältesten der Calvert-Söhne über und erlosch 1771 mit dem Tod des sechsten Baron Baltimore im Jahr 1771.

Eine besondere Rolle spielten die Lords Baltimore in der amerikanischen Geschichte als Besitzer und Pfalzgrafen (Palatine Lord) der Kolonie Maryland. George Calvert, der die Charter für die Errichtung der Kolonie beantragt hatte, starb kurz vor ihrer Erteilung 1632. In der amerikanischen Geschichtsschreibung ist mit Lord Baltimore meist sein Sohn Cecil Calvert gemeint. Nach den ersten beiden Titelträgern ist auch Baltimore benannt, die heute größte Stadt in Maryland.
