Baron Burghley

Marquess of Exeter ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of the United Kingdom. Es ist das älteste und damit erstrangige Marquessat in diesem Adelsstand.

Stammsitz der Familie ist Burghley House in Cambridgeshire bei Stamford.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde 1801 für Henry Cecil, 10. Earl of Exeter geschaffen. Er existierte bereits von 1525 bis 1538 in der Peerage of England, verfiel dann aber, als der erste Marquess ohne männliche Erben starb.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der Marquess of Exeter trägt zusätzlich die Titel Earl of Exeter (geschaffen 1605) und Baron Burghley (geschaffen 1557), beide in der Peerage of England.

Der älteste Sohn und Titelerbe des jeweiligen Marquess führt den Höflichkeitstitel Baron Burghley.
