UN-Water

UN-Water ist ein Mechanismus innerhalb der Vereinten Nationen, der 2003 nach dem Weltgipfel für nachhaltige Entwicklung 2002 in Johannesburg eingerichtet wurde. Sein Zweck ist die Unterstützung von Staaten bei der Erreichung der Millennium-Entwicklungsziele im Wasserbereich bis 2015.

Seinen Fokus legt UN-Water auf alle Süß- und Salzwasser-bezogenen Bereiche der Wasserversorgung wie auch beim Abwasser auf die Wasserentsorgung. Es zielt außerdem auf eine verbesserte Kooperation zwischen Regierungsaktivitäten und Entwicklungsorganisationen ab. UN-Water richtet den jährlich stattfindenden Weltwassertag aus und ist verantwortlich für die 2005 begonnene UN-Dekade für Wasser.

Die 24 Mitglieder von UN-Water bestehen aus Einrichtungen, Programmen und Finanzierungsinstrumenten der UN, die zu einem gewissen Grad in Wasseraktivitäten involviert sind. Dazu gehören unter anderem die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO), die Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation (FAO), die Weltorganisation für Meteorologie (WMO), das UN-Umweltprogramm (UNEP) und das UN-Entwicklungsprogramm (UNDP).
