Das U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), dt. etwa: Medizinische Forschungseinrichtung der US Army für Infektionskrankheiten) in Fort Detrick, Maryland ist das wohl bedeutendste Laboratorium der USA bzgl. der Forschung an biologischen Waffen bzw. entsprechenden Gegenmitteln.

Hier werden Impfstoffe, Behandlungs- und Diagnosemöglichkeiten für den Einsatz auf dem Feld und in Labors entwickelt und erforscht.

USAMRIID ist die einzige dem US-Verteidigungsministerium unterstehende Einrichtung, in der an biologischen Krankheitserregern der Risikogruppe 4 geforscht werden kann.

Es wird Wert auf eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit den CDC, der WHO und elitären akademischen Zentren weltweit gelegt.

Umsetzungen in Filmen finden sich in „Outbreak“ (1995, mit Dustin Hoffman) sowie „Carriers” (dt.: Virus X – Die Tödliche Falle; 1997), außerdem in dem Film „Der Hades-Faktor” (2006)
