Bluetooth low energy (angekündigt Juni 2007 als Bluetooth ultra low power, ehemals Wibree, gestartet von Nokia 2001) ist eine drahtlose Funktechnik, mit der sich Geräte in einem unmittelbaren Einzugsbereich vernetzen lassen sollen, und soll ab 2009 den Industriestandard Bluetooth ergänzen.
Wie Bluetooth 2.1 wird Bluetooth low energy im 2,4-GHz-Bereich senden, dabei aber deutlich weniger Energie verbrauchen und in der Integration erheblich kostengünstiger sein. Bluetooth low energy wird es als Einzel-Chip-Lösung für Kleinegräte geben und ist in Kombination mit bisherigen Bluetooth Geräten zu benutzen. Voraussetzung ist bei bisherigen Geräten mindestens ein Update der Software. Bei Bluetooth low energy wird die Funkreichweite auf etwa 10 m beschränkt bleiben. Anders als bei Bluetooth 2.1 wird bei Bluetooth low energy mit ma. 1 MBit/s gefunkt. Bluetooth 2.1 überträgt mit bis zu 2,1 Mbit/s.
Erstmals vorgestellt wurde Bluetooth low energy im Oktober 2006 auf der Basis des Wibree Vorschlagsd. Wibree und ist eine Gemeinschaftsentwicklung von Nokia, Epson, Broadcom, CSR und Nordic. Im Juli 2007 wurde das Wibree-Forum von der Bluetooth Special Interest Group übernommen und der Standard zu Bluetooth low energy umbenannt.[1] Der Name „Wibree“ setzte sich aus „Wi“ als Abkürzung für Wireless und „Bree“ nach einem Ort aus der Fantasiesaga Herr der Ringe, an dem sich wichtige Wege kreuzen, zusammen. Der ursprünglich verwendete Term Ultra Low Power wurde wegen der sprachlichen Assoziation Power = Stärke und im Hinblick auf die Forderung der Politik nach Geräten mit geringerem Energieverbrauch fallen gelassen[2].
