Die Universität gehört zum University of Wisconsin System und ist nach der University of Wisconsin-Madison die zweitgrößte Universität in diesem System. Derzeit sind 29.000 Studenten aus mehr als 80 Ländern eingeschrieben, an der Fakultät sind 1349 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt. Die Universität ist besonders für ihre Forschung und Lehre im Bereich Architektur und Stadtplanung bekannt. Es werden 166 Abschlüsse angeboten, die 87 Bachelor-, 51 Master- und 28 Doktorandenprogramme umfassen.

Geschichte
Die Geschichte der University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee reicht bis ins Jahr 1885, als die Milwaukee State Normal School eröffnete, um den Forderungen der Einwohner nach akademischer Bildung nachzukommen. Die heutige University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee wurde im Jahr 1956 als Resultat eines Zusammenschlusses der alten University of Wisconsin und des Wisconsin State College of Milwaukee (ehemals Milwaukee State Normal School) gegründet.
