Viscount Torrington ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of Great Britain, der von der Familie Byng geführt wird und nach der Stadt Great Torrington in der Grafschaft Devon benannt ist.

Stammsitz der Familie ist Great Hunts Place bei Winchester in Hampshire.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1721 für den Admiral und Seehelden George Byng geschaffen. Dieser hatte im Krieg der Quadrupelallianz die spanische Flotte im Mittelmeer besiegt. Später wurde er dann Erster Lord der Admiralität.

Nachgeordneter Titel

Als nachgeordneter Titel wird derjenige eines Baron Byng, of Southill in der Grafschaft Bedfordshire, geführt, der gleichzeitig verliehen wurde. Er gehört ebenfalls zur Peerage of Great Britain.

Weiterer Titel

1715 war George Byng bereits zum Baronet, of Wrotham in der Grafschaft Kent, gemacht worden. Auch dieser Titel, der zur Baronetage of Great Britain gehört, wird heute vom jeweiligen Viscount geführt.

Weitere Titel der Familie

Ein jüngerer Zweig der Familie führt den Titel Earl of Strafford.

Der berühmte Kommandeur der kanadischen Armee im Ersten Weltkrieg Julian Byng, 1. Viscount Byng of Vimy, dessen Titel allerdings mit seinem Tod erloschen, gehörte ebenfalls zur Familie.
