Bawku

Bawku ist ein Ort in der Upper East Region im westafrikanischen Staat Ghana. Es ist die Hauptstadt des Distriktes Bawku East.

Bei der letzten Volkszählung in Ghana am 26. März 2000 lebten 51.379 Menschen in der Stadt. Damit war Bakwu größer als Bolgatanga, die Hauptstadt der Upper East Region. Hochrechnungen zum 1. Januar 2007 ergaben eine Bevölkerungszahl von 59.055 Menschen. Damit liegt Bawku auf Platz 19 der größten Städte Ghanas.

Das in Bawku gelegene presbyterianisch geführte Krankenhaus verfügt über 256 Betten und dient aufgrund der Lage in der Nähe der Grenze zu Burkina Faso und Togo auch für die Nachbarländer als wichtiges Gesundheitszentrum.
