Die Wheeling Suspension Bridge 1977.
Die Wheeling Suspension Bridge ist eine Hängebrücke, die den Ohio River in Wheeling, West Virginia überspannt. Zwischen 1849 und der Eröffnung der Queenston-Lewiston Bridge im Jahr 1851 war die Brücke die längste Hängebrücke der Welt. Sie wurde von Charles Ellet Jr. erbaut.
1854 stürzte die Fahrbahn der Brücke in Folge eines schweren Sturmes ein, so dass Ellet gezwungen war, sie zu reparieren. Obwohl die Brücke seit dieser Zeit verschiedene Male repariert werden musste, ist sie auch heute noch in Gebrauch.
Die Brücke überspannt eine Distanz von 308m (1010 Fuß) über den Ohio River, so dass Boote unter ihr passieren können. Heute ist die Brücke die älteste Hängebrücke für Fahrzeuge, die noch immer genutzt wird.
Die Wheeling Suspension Bridge wurde am 27. Januar 1970 vom National Register of Historic Places unter der Nummer 70000662 als historisches Denkmal aufgenommen. Ebenfalls ist sie im National Historic Landmark vertreten.[1][2]
