World Association of Newspapers

Die 1948 gegründete World Association of Newspapers (WAN) versteht sich als weltweiter Dachverband 72 nationaler Zeitungsverbände. Des Weiteren gehören ihr zahlreiche Vorstände von Zeitungen in über 100 Ländern und einige Nachrichtenagenturen als Mitglieder an.

Die WAN beschreibt ihre Ziele als

  • Verteidigung der Pressefreiheit und der ökonomischen Unabhängigkeit von Zeitungen
  • Leisten eines Beitrags zur Weiterentwicklung der Zeitungsbranche durch die Förderung von Kommunikation zwischen Zeitungen in aller Welt
  • Förderung von Kooperationen zwischen den Mitgliederorganisationen

Die WAN hat ihren Sitz in Paris.

Seit dem 1. Februar ist Christoph Riess Group Chief Executive des gemeinsamen Branchenverbandes für Zeitungen und Nachrichtenmedien. WAN-IFRA, welches seit Mitte 2009 ein Zusammenschluss, bestehend aus WAN (Weltverband der Zeitungen mit Sitz in Paris) und IFRA (mit Sitz in Darmstadt)ist, hat das vorrangige Ziel den Zeitungen und der gesamten Zeitungsbranche in aller Welt, insbesondere deren Mitgliedern, bei der Verteidigung und Förderung von Pressefreiheit, Qualitätsjournalismus und redaktioneller Integrität sowie der Entwicklung von erfolgreichen Geschäftsaktivitäten und Technologien ein unverzichtbarer Partner zu sein.

Die WAN-IFRA verleiht seit 1961 jählich den Golden Pen of Freedom Award. Preisträger 2011 war der eritreische Jornalist und schwedische Staatsbürger Dawit Isaak. [1]
