Die Weltunion der Großmärkte (engl. World Union of Wholesale Markets, kurz WUWM) wurde 1958 unter dem Dach der IULA (International Union of Local Authorities, inzwischen aufgegangen in der UCLG) gegründet und hat das Ziel, die Großmärkte international zu fördern und die Verbindungen zum Einzelhandel und zu den Produzenten zu stärken. Momentan gibt es über 180 Mitglieder, deren größter Teil aus Europa kommt. Die Mitglieder sind in 4 Regionalbüros gegliedert (Europa, Nordamerika, Lateinamerika, Asien/Pazifik) und treffen sich einmal jährlich in wechselnden „Mitgliedsstädten“. In verschiedenen Arbeitsgruppen und Komitees werden zwischen den Treffen Maßnahmen und Ergebnisse erarbeitet.
Maßnahmen (Beispiele)
- Das jährlich erscheinende Mitgliedsbuch (Year Book) dient dem internationalen Lebensmittel, insbesondere dem Fruchthandel, als wichtiges Kontaktinstrument, wenn auch dessen Bedeutung im Zeitalter des Internets abnimmt.
- Momentan wird ein Good Practice Guide entwickelt, der als eine Art internationaler Qualitätsstandard für Großmärkte dienen soll.
- Die Webseite dient als Austauschort für Informationen und Studien aus dem Lebensmittelhandel
