Y Window System

Das Y Window System ist eine Sammlung von Protokollen und Computerprogrammen zur Ansteuerung grafischer Bildschirme im Allgemeinen und zur Anzeige einer grafischen Benutzungsoberfläche vor allem unter Unix-Systemen. Es ist von den Entwicklern als ein möglicher Nachfolger für das X Window System (X11) konzipiert.

Die aktuelle Version ist 0.2.1. Das System ist unter der GPL verfügbar. Es wurde von Mark Thomas als Diplomarbeit (Master) am Imperial College, London geschrieben. Zur Zeit (Stand Oktober 2006) wird das System nicht aktiv weiter entwickelt, die letzte große Änderung fand 2004 statt.

Technik

Ebenso wie im X Window System ist beim Y Window System Netzwerktransparenz vorgesehen. Im Unterschied zu X11 werden jedoch auch Server-seitige Widgets und Unicode unterstützt. Dazu kommt ein Modulsystem, das es erlaubt, Module wie Treiber für Grafikkarten und Eingabegeräte im laufenden Betrieb auszutauschen.

Das System enthält Treiber für die SDL Library und ist somit unter sehr vielen Betriebssystemen nutzbar. Ebenfalls gibt es einen Treiber für den Linux-Framebuffer.

Es existieren Sprachanbindungen für C, C++, Python und Perl.
